In order to save valuable counter space during meal preparation, TotemBowl is stackable and secure, allowing for ingredients to be properly stored before use as well as safely moved around the kitchen.
My initial direction to help with available space was to increase the amount of work area using a cutting board as my vehicle. Though my concept received generally positive feedback, almost all of the comments were about the bowls that could store underneath a raised cutting board.
I reassessed 3 months of research and altered my approach from one of expansion to consolidation. Since bowls are such a common tool in cooking, minimizing their footprint can save significant amounts of space.
I toyed with a number of possible shapes to allow for the stacking function. The final form is optimal for stacking as well as nesting, while not deviating too far from a typical bowl shape.
Upon starting the Kickstarter process to produce TotemBowls on my own, I realized that aesthetic and minor form adjustments would help with both production time and cost. Constructing the bowls solely out of Tritan™ plastic allows for nearly identical functionality, improved manufacturing processes, and a cleaner product appearance.
