Designed as a more fashion-minded companion to the Misfit Shine 2, Ray required extensive work with engineers to successfully adapt to the new form factor. I oversaw both the development of the form and the manufacturing, defining elements like the translucency, material finish, unique band functionality, and internal geometry.
MISFIT RAY – NECKLACE
While Misfit's other wearables draw inspiration from watches and other jewelry, Ray was intended not to replace the accessories currently on a user's wrist, but to compliment them with a minimal and stylish form. The necklace design is one of many accessories for the Ray that heightens its level of fashion, its unique design allowing for two ways of wearing the necklace depending on the occasion.
SHINE 2 – STRAP v2
To prevent Shine 2 from falling out of users' straps during particularly intense workouts, I helped create and test a design with more consistent support for the device. Strong, flexible straps co-molded around a rigid core base.
Signifying a new phase for the Misfit brand (after our acquisition by Fossil), Phase drew on the design pillars of minimalism and honesty to translate the Misfit style of a tradition watch form factor. In place of our normal LED lights, a hole at 6 o'clock signals the user to various messages and notifications using a hidden color wheel.
Flare was an exercise in optimization of the original Misfit Shine – how compact, intuitive, and cost-efficient could an activity tracker be while remaining desirable, communicative, and accurate? With a single LED, simplified assembly and construction, and completely optimized internals, Flare is Misfit (both in aesthetic and function) at its most minimalist.
With Misfit Ray as a more measured push towards fashion, the Specter concept was our answer in the opposite direction – fitness. The wireless bluetooth headphones store music on device and track activity with the same accuracy as our other trackers.
Bolt is a smart LED light bulb that can be controlled by app or by a paired Misfit device. The unique fin pattern helps disperse heat while highlighting the unique and rare interaction with a light bulb – twisting one in/out of a socket.
MISFIT BOLT LITE
The Bolt Lite concept removes some features of Bolt – color changing, adapt-with-music lighting – to compete with normal light bulbs in cost while still offering enhanced controls and a superior lifespan. Though the metal fins were removed, their influence is still present on the interior bulb structure.
This scale concept worked within the developing Misfit ecosystem and helped better inform the user to their health progress. The textured and patterned surface prevents slipping, the screen is hidden until turned on, and lights on the underside of the scale illuminate when motion is detected to act as a nightlight when it is dark.
