SENIOR B.F.A. THESIS

HUSH (Honed Ultra-Sonic Harmonies) is a portable sound masking device to combat noise pollution. We live in an increasingly noisy world, but the solution may in fact me to harness sound as opposed to eliminating it. A year of research lead to the development of HUSH, a portable speaker that combats noise pollution while increasing concentration.

A SIMPLE BEAM OF SOUND

HUSH creates a beam of sound-masking white noise (or the user's choice of music) to provide only the intended target with the experience of their choosing.

 

PERFORATED STEEL COVER [AFFECT ILLUSTRATION]

The form had to remain relatively simple and flat in order to accommodate the specific arrangement of speakers. The perforated brushed steel cover not only protects the parametric speakers beneath, but assists in directing the sound waves into a beam.

FORM EXPLORATION

Examination of shapes and features that enhance the experience of directional sound or silence.

 

HANDS ON LEARNING

Construction of a functioning, palm-sized parametric speaker. I sourced the different parts from a vender in Japan and then constructed 2 working speaker arrays (one large, one small) to text the strength and clarity of each, as well as validate the technology itself. The larger speaker was hung in my thesis exhibit to demonstrate the technology, while the smaller validated my "pocket-sized" form.

COMPONENTS [EXPLODED VIEW]

Arrangement of motherboard, parametric speakers, lithium ion battery, control buttons, light board, and support structures. The form has the near minimum dimensions needed to contain the various components in their proper layout.
